Writer's Talk- Outlines

Posted in Writers Talk

Hi all!

This week’s Writer’s Talk is about outlines. does anybody do a quick outline of their story beforehand? Do you find that a brief outline of the story helps you keep on track, or does it limit your creativity? How detailed are your outlines?  Do you use it as an emergency measure, if a section just isn’t flowing? What’s your experience?

Homer

P.S. Do you guys think that Writer's Talk and any other posts about writing in general should be posted here or on the Inklings' Lounge, or even a new blog?

Well, honestly I keep an outline in my head and only write it down if it's very complicated. I've never been able to do it for one of my regular stories, however. Also, I think that here for posting the Writer's Talks is good. It is a writing blog. Interesting topic!

Well in all do honesty this was part of what the Inkling's Lounge was created for. Inklings is really only meant for stories.

on a note anyone think we should rename this place to Inklings' Stories?

Well, Inklings is just for the stories now. The lounge was made for everything that we want to talk about that isn't a story. So, a post like this would go on the lounge.
And no, I don't write an outline. I often change some things as I go, so writing an outline would be hard for me.:P

God Bless You!

Personally, I hate outlines... I'm having to use them for school and they are really cramping my style! haha But I do know people who use them and find them very helpful. I just don't.

I have not been using an outline for my stories until recently, but I have an outline for only one story. It is helpful because you know what is going to happen so you will not get stuck in a place. I only outline the main part, though. I leave the details to my imagination.

GOD bless,

Sometimes, very occasionally I use outlines, but, to be honest, not very often. With the last book I wrote the outline was in my head, not on paper.
All sorts of writers are different I suppose, outlines do actually seem to limit creativity with me, yes, because I keep getting new ideas and if I had to use an outline, it would be changed every time I try to write more of the book.
With me, the only books I have only ever successfully completed are the ones I didn't have outlines for, for some weird reason, the ones I had outlines for I ended up never finishing, all writers are different I suppose.
