Free Komodo Ebook!

Posted in Contest

With only a couple of strings attached!

From 1999-2004 I was busy trying to make a living as a children's writer. I had a few things published including a chocolate timeline in Focus on the Family Clubhouse, a writing article in the Writer, and several other odds and ends here and there. But making a living at it wasn't happening for me and so I decided to try book writing. I wrote three non-fiction books and actually had a very highly thought of agent in New York contact me about one of them. But then he found out the publisher had recently acquired a similar manuscript and that was it.

I got tired of spending mountains of time only to get rejected. I knew the work was good, but competition is stiff and I needed to find something more lucrative to do. So I packed up my writing and turned to other things. Then this past summer, I pulled those three book manuscripts out again and took the one I liked the best (Life of a Komodo Dragon) and decided to turn it into an ebook and see if I could sell it.  I reformatted the story, added photos from photographers around the world (all of whom gave me permission of use) and added links to other internet sites.  But like anything, you need some word of mouth to get the word out there.

Amber has read my book and she has published a review of it. You can find that at her site.  And now I am going to give five of my Komodo ebooks away to the first five people that follow these directions:

1. Go read Amber's review so you will know that someone besides me thinks it is a good book. Leave a comment.

2.  Come back here and leave a comment .

3.  I would very much appreciate it if you would then write a review of the book after you have perused it (be the review good or bad). I would then like to be able to link to review at my Ebay store and on my blog and maybe use a comment or two from your review if that is okay. People don't want to buy something from some unknown person, but reviews help.

If I can get some response on this, then I have a Hummingbird and Bison manuscript that I can start working on. So thanks again and good luck!

Contest update! Due to the overwhelming response, I have decided to offer five more copies of my ebook for free! And anyone who does a review will be allowed to give away one free copy of the ebook in a contest of their own! Thanks for helping me get the word out about my book!

I read Amber's review of your Komodo Dragon ebook and must say it sounds great!! I especially liked her mentioning the 'graphic details'. My boys 7 & 10, live for the kind of graphic details that make me squirm!! I would love to receive this ebook (hint hint)!!! We are very interested in hummingbirds too. We have four feeders that are always busy and have recently found a hunningbird feather. You can see it at www.homeschoolblogger.com/kateyz/174083. I had never seen such a teeny tiny feather before, it's quite something!!
Aside from the possibility of receiving a free ebook, I really enjoyed visiting your blog!!
Have a great day

LOL! Amber, if I can get the other two done, I'll see about researching the King Cobra:)

Most kids do enjoy the more graphic moments, they aren't squeamish like their parents.

Aug. 7, 2006 - Can you count me in if ...

Posted by MuckFootMom
do I count if I saw Amber's review first? I was thinking "Melissa O. Markham! That sounds soooo familiar!" then I said, "Hey, it's OUR Melissa Markham!!!"

I would love to read it! And review it! I've already commented at Amber's, and here's my comment here!

Aug. 7, 2006 - This book sounds interesting.

My kids love reptiles, unlike their mother. I would be interested in seeing the pictures you used in this book. How were you able to locate all the photographs and receive permission to use them, it sounds like a huge undertaking!

As to the Komodo pictures in my book, it was a bit of an undertaking. I did google search for the pictures that fit my book. Then I tracked those people down and asked if I could use their pictures for my ebook in exchange for linking to their site and crediting the photo with their name. Everyone was very nice and they all agreed. They said if I ever got a 'real' publisher or if it really took off to let them know and we would work out some kind of payment to them. So far I have bartered a couple, but haven't sold any yet.

Aug. 8, 2006 - e-books

I just left at comment at Amber's. Now I've got a question or two for you.
How do you go about making and selling e-books? And how do you find the photos and get permission to use them? My 14yo son and I are writing a children's book about the weather, and we don't know what to do with it once we're done. (Actually, *I'm* done, he just needs to add a few things and then we need some artwork for it.) I have several other book ideas, I just haven't gotten around to writing them, partly because I don't know what to do next! TIA!!!

Thanks for the book, it's great!! I like information packed books that are written as a read aloud story. I find we are all more interested. The pictures were pretty amazing too. My boys particularly enjoyed the one of the deer being eaten, they also like hearing about how the komodo shake the stomach and intestine contents around. Ewwww gross!!
Thanks again,
Kathleen

I am so excited for you!!! My DH and I have tried children's book publishing...it is a tough business, but congrats on the projects you have had published and on your ebook. I'm so thrilled publishing is starting to change and authors don't have to be at the mercy of big publishing houses anymore. I'm off to read Amber's review...oh, I'm just so thrilled for you!!! Why not use your God-given talent? Why wait for some agent or publisher...they certainly don't know more than God! Thank you for sharing your writing talent with us.

I read Amber's review, and couldn't find it at my library. LOL You are tricky! Here you are a book writer, and I didn't even know it. I have two children's books, that would be so cute, but don't know where to begin. I also need to get this book on education done and published first.

I would LOVE to review your book on Komodo dragons. I have a home with 4 boys, and each of them loves lizards, dragons and dinosaurs. I think they would be fascinated with the Komodo book.

Let me know if I qualify!

I'd love a copy! I didn't ask because I figured they may have all been spoken for and having just won a book over at graceforgayle, I didn't want to be a cool-prize prize hog. My DD is an ANIMAL NUT...I know she will thoroughly love this. My email (ok, all you Internet wierdos reading this, please don't bombard me) eichhorM@aol.com. Thank you!!

I don't know if the contest is over or not. If it is I am sure my d and I will be ordering a book anyway. Blessings on your venture. You could think of writing a book about writing e-books. Lots of people want to do that to. I will try to advertise it too if I can get my putering to work. Blessings

I cannot say how much all of the kind responses have meant to me and how much I appreciate your willingness to review my book and help me get the word out! Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it. I have sent out 10 copies of my ebook, maybe 11, I lost count, so the contest has ended. But I will be posting links to reviews and if you like what you read, you are certainly welcome to visit my shop at Ebay and purchase a copy of your own.

Have a great day and thanks again ladies. I am overwhelmed!
