Brown Widow Spider Moves to Mississippi

Posted in Animals

A Spider to Avoid

I didn't know there was a brown widow spider! Related to the black widow, it has similar distinctive markings.  Missisippi Gulf Coast has been invaded by them. Scientists believe they probably migrated up from Florida.  Thanks to the Discovery Channel for the article and photo.  I grew up hearing about Black Widows and Brown Recluses. To my knowledge, I have never seen a Brown Recluse and until about 6 years ago, I never saw a Black Widow spider. But we have many of them around our home. They give me the willies!

Yes, they are poisonous, but not as aggressive as the black widow and the article says there are some who say it is more poisonous, but in reality, they say the affects of the poison are less.

We have black widows here as well as the brown recluse, although I've never had thebad luck of running into one! I'm going to do a bit of research to see if we have the brown widow here too. Great, another spider to add to the list!

I have seen several black widows around my home. They give me the creeps. Until a few months ago, I had never seen a brown recluse. It was actually a very terrifying moment! I got into the shower and began washing my hair. When I turned around and looked up.....a HUGE spider was sitting above the shower head watching me. I never bathed so fast in my life. I was afraid that it might jump down on me. When I got out, I looked up what kind of spider it was. It turned out to be the brown recluse. Needless to say, that spider had an untimely death. I have 3 kids and did not want to take any chances.

My cousin was bit on the finger by a brown recluse. He got very sick and almost lost his hand. These spiders are nothing to mess around with!

I'm a native Floridian. Every late summer we find a lot of these creatures in our garage. In fact, we recently fired off a bug bomb to get rid of them. As said before, they aren't as aggressive as the black widow but they give the heebee geebees just as easily. They're nice for fly control though.

Thank you. I have killed about a dozen of these brown (light grey) spiders with red hour glass outside my house in San Diego CA over the last two years. At first I thought they were immature Black Widows, but seeing them with egg sacks and not changing color convinced me they were (for me) a new species. Now I know they are Brown Widows (and poisonous). It is some relief to us humans that we can identify these most venomous arachnids by the red hourglass of their abdomen.

My 2 year old daughter was playing with her truck outside at grandma's house in Orange County, CA. She turned it over and when I came out to check on her she was about to touch something. I asked what she was doing and she said, Spiwer Momma. It was this big brown widow. It was very slow and my husband ran out and killed it. My brother said he was finding them all over the backyard.

I killed one today in Mobile, AL. I never heard of the "Brown" until today. I started doing some searching and found this picture. Exactly what I killed, with 2 sacks of eggs as well.

I recently found a Brown Widow Spider and 4 egg sacks in our garage. I had never heard of this species before I did some research. I understand that they have become common in the Mississippi/Lousiana area. Well, I live in South Orange County California. I should have photographed it before I sprayed it. There heeeer!

Ok, I am 11 years old, and I have heard alot about these spiders. Though which one is more poisonous does anybody know? All I heard was that they were discovered when Katrina was over.

Discovered several underneath the rim of a flower pot in Baton Rouge in June of 2008. Killed one and did research to find out that it was the brown widow. Decided to be safe and I checked my entire yard. ANYPLACE a spider would be, I checked. Took me an entire day, but by the end of it, I found thirty-two of these little buggers, and easily more than 50 egg sacks!!! Warned all the neighbors and they found them in their yards as well. We bought some spray from home depot which did the trick rather well. Got rid of other spiders, too. We had more bug bugs, but to me, it's a small price to pay.

Gary, thanks for sharing your story! That's amazing! I am with you, an increase in insects in a small price to pay. We are in black widow country, but I never saw them as a kid, now I see several a summer and that's without looking in the hidden recesses. - Melissa

I live in central Alabama. A few years ago, there was a spider living right outside my bedroom window. I swear, every Friday, the web disappeared and the spider would leave. He came back every Sunday night and stayed for the week. My family became fascinated with it and I did some research. I had never heard of a brown widow until then, but that's exactly what it was. When I realized that it was more poisonous (but less agressive) than a black widow, we decided to kill it. I haven't seen another one since then.
