Just another good reason to keep your children as far away from a public school as possibleAug. 30, 2007

The following information was reported in the Mon., Aug. 27, issue of my hometown newspaper, The Times Gazette of Hillsboro, OH. A Peebles, OH, Elementary School third-grade teacher, Sandra L. Bratt, 31, was charged with rape following her arrest Thursday on charges alleging she had an inappropriate relationship with a student for several years. According to the complaint filed in Adams County Court by Adams County Sheriff Kermit Howard, Bratt engaged in sexual conduct with an unidentified male student for the past five to six years. The student was approximately 11 years old when the activity began and is now 17 years old. I did not go to school in Peebles, but growing up in Highland County, I had the opportunity to be in and around the village in nearby northern Adams County many, many times. These kinds of problems do not exist only in the "rough" inner city schools of urban areas but are just as likely to happen in the "nice" schools of suburban and rural America too. And it is scary to the MAX how this kind of thing could go on, apparently unnoticed by anyone, for "several years"!

I live in Peebles... I graduated from Peebles High School... and yes it is a shame that something like this happened... I knew Sandie... I was a friend of hers... I didn't know any of this was going on... I am not saying that what she did was right, but... this could happen to anyone... or anyone could do this... it's not a reason to bad mouth the public school district... just because she was a teacher... I went to public school all my life, and I turned out just fine... there's no reason to shelter your children to keep them away from stuff like this, because it could happen anywhere... church... a neighbor... anyone...

I did not say, nor did I mean to imply, that all public schools are bad or that all people who go to public schools are bad. That is not what homeschooling is really all about. But I must disagree that "this could happen to anyone" or "anyone could do this." Yes, I know that it could happen anywhere, but World Net Daily has shown that this kind of thing is becoming an epidemic in public schools (the same places in which youngers are often being taught that there are no absolute values, that sex with anyone under almost any circumstances is all right "if you love one another," and so forth). I also disagree with saying "there's no reason to shelter your children to keep them away from stuff like this." When they were small, I did not let my children play in the middle of busy streets or among the chemicals under the sink because those were places of danger. I SHELTERED them, even while preparing them for crossing busy streets and handling chemical products when they're older and more mature. Likewise, the evidence is showing that public schools are becoming increasingly dangerous places--both physically and spiritually--so I will shelter my children as I do what I can to prepare them to live in this world.
