Aug. 18, 2006 - Our First Week Back to School
Today ends our first week back at school. There were some challenging days, as there always are when you begin a new year, but in the end I think things went pretty well.
One of the hardest parts of a new school year, for me, is deciding on a schedule that will work best for our family. It changes every year - The young ones get older, new little ones make their entrance into the family routine and things just change. After this week I think I may have formulated a school schedule that will work for this year.
I have scheduled 4 full days of school for each week, leaving room for field trips, appointments or anything else that may "come up" (including those days when you only get a half day's worth of work finished). The most important thing that I need to remind myself when working with a schedule is that it is okay to "throw out the schedule" some days - I am a master, not a slave, to my schedule.
A *typical* school day for my three older children will look like this (I have put in parenthesis the work that only my twins will be required to finish):
9:30 – 10:00 Bible Reading, Memory Verses 10:00 – 11:00 Phonics, (Copywork/Handwriting), (Practice Reading), Mom Reads Aloud 11:00 – 11:45 History (Timeline), Geography Mapwork 11:45 – 12:45 Lunch and Mid-Day Chores 12:45 – 1:30 Science - 1 day a week, Math 1:30 – 2:30 Art Appreciation - 2 days a week, Mom Reads Aloud
My two year old will either be napping or engaged in *reading*, artwork, puzzles or *games* while I am working with the older children. However, he will participate in all of the time that we will spend reading aloud (provided he is awake).
"And we know that ALL things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose." -Romans 8:28
