Jan. 30, 2007 - Potty Training
Recently, Angela, at FruitfulFamily, posted about her woes with potty training and I replied with my latest success story. I thought I would share it with all of blogland....
I always dread potty training and try to put it off as long as possible. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing I dread more than changing stinky diapers. (Well, except maybe taking care of the laundry... but, I digress.) Ray was adamant about getting Josh potty-trained before it became too uncomfortable for me to change two baby's diapers all day long. So, he said it was time....
The weekend before our first potty-training day, Josh and I had a special "date" dedicated to finding a potty chair and picking out treats (he chose little licorice nibs) for when he is successful. While we were out I explained to him that he was becoming a big boy and that he was going to use the toilet and wear big boy undies, like his older brothers. He was sooo excited! He asked me if he could get race car undies and I told him that when he stayed dry and went potty on the toilet, like a big boy, that I would buy him race car undies. Boy, was he thrilled! (He asked for a skateboard too, but I said he'd have to be a bigger boy for that one!!)
Anyway, come Monday morning (potty-training day one) I took off his diaper and let him run around for a bit without anything on. Every so often I would ask him if he needed to go potty and remind him that he would get a treat if he went on the toilet.
Well, we had two accidents that morning... Each time I explained to him that he needed to go potty in the toilet and would walk him to the toilet and have him sit down to try again. We would then walk back to where he peed and clean it up together. Cleaning it up, coupled with NOT getting a treat was NOT okay with him. He went the rest of the day to the toilet each time he needed to pee.
Now, pooping was a different story... He refused to go at all until the next afternoon when he had his one and only accident in his pants. Because that was so uncomfortable he has since only gone in the toilet. (Oh, giving him extra treats for going poop in the toilet helped too, I'm sure!)
I would urge you to only put cotton undies on your little one - Once you decide to potty train and are determined not to give up, DO NOT put a diaper or pull-up on him/her, except for maybe night-time. Diapers AND pull-ups absorb too much to make going any where but in the toilet too easy and convenient.
By the way, Josh got his race car undies and wants only to wear THEM... It's been good incentive for him to keep them dry!!
Do have any recent potty-training success stories?? What has worked for you???

I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter. I have been putting off potty training because it is too time consuming. Homeschooling for the first year is hard enough... :) You make it sounds so easy! I will start next Tuesday. We are going away for the weekend, with a long car trip involved or I would start sooner. Thank you for sharing you ideas AND success!

Thanks for stopping by my blog and adding me as a friend.
My 2 yo girl was potty trained right when she turned 2. I was so happy because I had a new baby. But my boys.... one was 3, the other 3 1/2. Nothing I did could convince them that using the potty was the way to go. Sometimes I think that if Princess C was a boy, I would still have 2 in diapers. UGH! Congrats on your quick success. |

After working off and on from the time they turned 2 years old, my boys were both trained around their 3rd birthdays. They hardly ever had any accidents after the first few weeks of training.
My daughter pretty much trained herself when she was 2 1/2. Things were great for about 3 months. Then she started having accidents every day. She was mature enough to change her own clothes, so I didn't do much about it. Then we had another baby and it got worse (which is common). So, now that the baby is 3 months old (these accidents have been going on for 9 months) I finally said that's enough. We used an incentive (she wanted a pink teddy bear). She's been dry for 5 days in a row. I'll still give her a Hersey Kiss every night for a while if she has dry days. Hopefully, it will continue! Because soon my next daughter will be 2 yo and I'll start working with her!

With all of the toys, books and school stuff filling our home, it tends to looks as if it is void of any order. In reality we are very systematic in the way our main parts (each family member) are connected, so as to form one whole unit (our family), thus creating "organized chaos".
