Feb. 18, 2007 - "Do you know what you're having?" and other questions

Uggh.... That question has got to be the most bizarre - It always makes me laugh! I know it's not a monkey or a elephant... Let me see, last I knew I was having a BABY!!

Since we began to share with family and friends that God is blessing us with another arrow to add to our ever-expanding quiver, the questions are flying at us from all directions. I don't just get the shocked looks and "oh my, another one?" now I get the fun questions to answer, too.

One that drives me nuts, though, is the question that is so often posed to me, especially now that I am going to have child number 6... "How will you have enough love to go around?" I suppose it seems like a legitimate question to that only child out there, or to those parents who have only one or two children, but I just don't get it! If I was created in the image of God and He loves the whole world, how could He have given me only enough love to share with a few??? Sure my time and attention may be limited, but, in addition to me and Daddy, there are 5 older siblings (pseudo moms and dads, if you will) that will love on this little one! Besides, God never gives us more than we are capable, through Him, to take care of and I believe that He will continue to increase the love I have to share as my family increases!

"Where are you going to put them all?" As if they were rabbits! You know, I spent most of my childhood living in very small spaces. Sure, it seemed cramped at times, but there was love shared and we all enjoyed being close to each other (we still do!). My siblings and I grew up respecting each other and watching out for each other. I think our 2700 square foot house will do just fine - My children have plenty of room to learn, play and grow. Heck, we have enough room for several more!

This is a fun one... "Are you sure you're not having twins again?" Am I really that big already??? Now, I know that once one has twins the chances of having another set increase, but just because I've had twins once doesn't mean I am destined to have twins again. (After 2 ultrasounds, don't ya think we would know?)

"Are you gonna have more, or are you done after this?" The all-to-familiar shocked looks return when I answer this question. I have two answers actually. Most often I just reply, with a shrug, "I don't know, we'll see," but sometimes I add, "...God has put it on our hearts to adopt someday, too!"

Now for my all-time favorite question asked, even by perfect strangers... "Don't you know what causes that?" Uh, yeah, and we like it!

We get that question a lot as well. We just found out we're pregnant with number 6 too, but we haven't told anyone yet.

The worst question someone ever asked me was "Are you getting your tubes tied after this one?" I've also been told that I should stop because that person had a bad experience trying to control their own children, so I must be destined for the same fate, and other awful comments.

I will never understand the need some people feel to impose upon my fertility or my parenting abilities (If someone calls me a saint one more time.... ;) ),

My favorite answer though, if someone asks if we're done having kids or are planning on having more, is "We're trying for one birthday in every month! Their jaw usually drops at this point and they walk away thinking I'm certifiable. But they usually leave me alone after that :P

Well Christine, I love you and admire you, and after this I am reminded of why! I am so excited for you and your awesome family, you know I love all of them and can't wait to meet the newest! I'm sorry you have to deal with people who don't appreciate the joy and gift of children, but hopefully in that, you can be encouraged to know that your heart is different and through your experiences of Motherhood you are growing and learning more about God and his love for us! I can't wait to hear about the latest fun facts about your pregnancy...straight hair, curly hair, the kids reactions in learning about their new sibling and the fun way you guys find out about your new little one! God knows each child before we do, and he doesn't make mistakes! (maybe you should tell that to the crazy people who keep asking you why you are having more kids!) ok, maybe I'm going on a little long, but I hope to experience the same thing someday, and when I do, I'll call you for encouragment!! love yah, talk to you soon! This is SO great, Chris - I get asked all the same questions and reading your responses (spoken aloud or not) gave me such a good laugh! I suppose thus far we also know that we're not having an elephant (or twin elephants), we'll put the baby in our home, the baby will be loved by even more people for all his/her siblings, God hasn't told us if we're done yet, and apparently making babies is one of our God-given talents! It's funny, the guy at our local used bookstore in Jackson called us the "Rabbit Family" - and he thought this when we only had two! I'm glad you are blessed with so many -your family is such a testimony of God's love and blessings!

Congratulations on your newest blessing!

When we found out that #7 was actually #7 AND #8, we got - "What are you, stupid/crazy/insane?" and "What were you THINKING?" As if we had anything to do with it! As if we weren't THRILLED at the prospect!

I love your responses. I think I'll borrow some!

With all of the toys, books and school stuff filling our home, it tends to looks as if it is void of any order. In reality we are very systematic in the way our main parts (each family member) are connected, so as to form one whole unit (our family), thus creating "organized chaos".
