Apr. 21, 2008 - So Sad!
My precious Baby Noah had quite a little accident today... He burned both of his hands very badly on the glass covering our fireplace. Boy, doesn't it look like it hurts?
Fortunately his left hand does not look nearly as bad as his right.

We are supposed to keep a close eye on his hands, cover them if necessary, but not let him on the floor, as the blisters may pop allowing for infection.
I feel so bad for the little guy, and there is nothing I can do to alleviate the pain. A horrible feeling as a mom who wants to just make it better!
Even with badly burned hands he is still all smiles... As long as I am close by, of course!

Apr. 19, 2008 - Birthday Robots
Josh loves robots these days, and was excited about his robot themed birthday party. Well, I found on the GoodyBlog some fun robot cupcakes, and couldn't wait to make them. I have had such a ball creating edible masterpieces for each of my kiddos special days, and these were no exception.
Mine were a bit different than the cupcakes featured on the GoodyBlog and Parents magazine, but they were a big hit.
Here's how I made them.

I decorated graham cracker halves, quarters, and sticks with brightly colored frosting and sprinkles. A half for the head, quarters for the legs, and sticks for the body.

I took two large cupcakes, frosted them, and placed them together, to create the body.

I then decorated them with dumdums, fruit loops, m&ms, and black decorating frosting.
Here they are:

Apr. 17, 2008 - The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet
Yes, we were on national television!
If you haven't read my post on how this all came about, go ahead and do that now.... I'll wait.
We had the camera crew here on Tuesday filming our family for the show... They got shots of the kiddos having pillow fights, wrestling with Daddy, eating lunch, and even loading up in our Yukon XL.
They also interviewed me and fed me some sound bites. Ugh, that was my least favorite part. I hope you didn't laugh when you saw the pre-taped interview segment, and if you didn't see it - good! It was a trip, however, to think about how much milk, eggs, and cheese we consume every month. I guess I had never really added it all up before - I just knew how much to buy whenever we went grocery shopping. But, wow!
I didn't have much time after the crew left to get things ready for the kids night at Mimi and Poppy's, let alone figure out what to wear, and pack myself and Noah. The car arrived much earlier than I would have hoped and we left him waiting for 20 minutes before we were ready to head to the airport. I guess that's what happens when you give a family of 8 less than 24 hours notice.
After a grueling night of travel, with an 8 month old, we arrived at the studio bright and early yesterday morning. We had to change in the bathroom, but managed just fine. Thank God for the hair and makeup team... They made us look good, if I do say so myself. They would have changed their minds about having us on the show if we had to appear on TV looking like we did when we arrived!
Mike and Juliet, their crew, and Sanyika were all wonderful! They couldn't have made us feel more comfortable. I truly forgot that I was being watched by thousands of people on national TV! I was watched by thousands of people!! If you haven't already checked it out, go watch.
While I thought that I had some pretty good tips, of my own, on how to cut food costs when shopping for a large family, I was excited to hear from Sanyika.
Here is what she suggested:
Create a plan
- Draft up a menu and take it with you on your shopping trip. This is very helpful in avoiding coming home with a random assortment of items and not knowing how to make them transform in to a meal.
Stretch your food and your dollar
- Purchase whole chicken versus parts, and use every piece of it, from the skin to the gizzards, to prepare different meals.
- Make your milk stretch by adding 1/3 cup water to every 1 cup of milk. You'll get 3 cups more milk by doing this and the kids will never know. (Unless, of course, it's broadcasted as a suggestion to your parents on national television - My kids have not stopped asking if we water down the milk!)
- Begin the habit of portioning small quantities of snacks for the kiddos in to small ziploc baggies. Doing this will also help teach healthy eating habits.
Grow your own garden
- Now, this is something that my kids are super-excited about. They can't wait to help till the ground, plant the seeds, and tend a garden full of tomatoes, watermelon and herbs. We're thinking about a few fruit trees, too.
Thank you for all of the great tips, Sanyika!
You can check out Sanyika's Smart Money Blog, where she enjoys sharing her financial expertise. She is such a beautiful person, both inside and out. Don't you just love her name?
Now, for some quick shots from the Green Room at the Fox News studio.

Ray and myself, with Juliet and her youngest admirer, Noah.

Apr. 13, 2008 - Bright, Sunshiny Weekend
The last two days have been unusually warm... Revitalizing sunshine and an occasional breeze. Beautiful! If it stayed like this all through the summer I would be happy!
It did start to get hot, though, with the mercury hitting 93 this afternoon. The kiddos begged Daddy to take them swimming like we did yesterday, but I was out with my sisters and Mom, so he didn't relent. (I can't blame him. Try watching six kiddos, 7 and under, with three that can't swim, by yourself... No thanks!)
Yesterday, however, they all had a ball. Even Noah loved playing and splashing in the water!
I see many afternoons at the pool in our future!
"What were you doing without your family on this delightful Sunday?" you ask. Well, since my sister, Rachel, is a bit overwhelmed at all that must be done in the next six months to plan her wedding, and just didn't know where to start, we decided to attend a fantastic wedding show locally, which included a limo ride and wine tasting.
There were vendors galore, wonderful wine, and some very helpful classes. Rachel even received a very detailed wedding planning binder, complete with a disk full of excel spreadsheets to help with everything from the budget to the guest list. I am glad that I was able to accompany her and hope that I can continue to be very involved in the planning of this special day!

Apr. 5, 2008 - Big News!
My sister is now officially engaged!! I found out today that Rachel's boyfriend, Luke, proposed to her yesterday! We all knew it was coming, but weren't sure what was taking him so long!
Rachel's ring is gorgeous, and they are both so happy. Luke is a great guy and will make a wonderful addition to our family. My kiddos have been wanting to call him Uncle Luke for so long, and think it is "super cool" that he is going to be their Uncle, for real, now.
The only sad part about all of this (from a purely selfish perspective) is that they will live in Tennessee - Far, far away from California is Tennessee. Our family has always been so close, and we will miss her terribly. Hopefully we will be able to visit them often.
They have set the special date, and it just happens to fall on my birthday... Isn't that cool? I am so anxious to start helping her with the wedding plans. She has just a bit over six months, and lots to plan!
Anywho... Just wanted to share the news!

Mar. 29, 2008 - Family News
It's been a while since I chatted about the happenings in our household. Here's a glimpse of what has been going on --
The twins had a horrible allergy attack over last weekend, and now they have pneumonia! They are so miserable... They have horrible coughing fits, won't eat, can't sleep, and hate to sit still! Regular breathing treatments, lots of fluid intake, rest, and tons of vitamins should do the trick.
I finally got a new laptop! Our PC kinda died, and I was stuck begging Ray to leave me his laptop every day. It wasn't workin' out very well, so he bought me one last weekend, and it just arrived today!
The Johnson & Johnson Baby Camp is just around the corner. I am so excited about meeting some of my blogging buddies, and just having some much needed time away. My sister-in-law offered to take Noah, so Ray will be a bit more inclined to do some fun things with the older kiddos while I'm away... They should have fun!
I would love to hear about what's going on with all of my family and friends, that I know are reading. I haven't had much time to get around to visit all of my virtual friends, either, but hopefully I can catch up with most of you (in both worlds) over the next few days!
XOXOXO and many blessings!!

Mar. 27, 2008 - California Families Fight Back
Latest News -- My hubby was quoted in our local paper!
Local residents weigh in on home school ruling
From HSLDA -- (yesterday)
HSLDA is pleased to announce that all the major California-based homeschool organizations have come together in order to better serve California homeschool families.
The statement below outlines our position on the recent court ruling and explains the goal we are all working towards.
Joint Statement Regarding Homeschooling in California
The following organizations, California Homeschool Network, Christian Home Educators Association of California, Private and Home Educators of California and HomeSchool Association of California, represent the major California-based organizations working on a statewide basis to support private homeschooling. They, together with the Home School Legal Defense Association, which also works in California to support private homeschooling and which has members in California, jointly issue the following statement:
1. We are united in the goal of protecting the right of parents to teach their children privately at home without additional governmental interference.
2. We believe that children deserve to learn in the environment that best meets their individual needs. We support the right of parents to direct their children’s education including, if they desire, teaching their children privately at home apart from any public school program and without a teaching credential.
3. We believe that the opinion rendered by the Second District Court of Appeals in the case titled In re Rachel L on February 28, 2008 is excessively broad in its scope and incorrectly states the law as applied to home education in California.
4. We believe that the interpretation of California law, as understood by our organizations and by the California Department of Education prior to the issuance of this decision, is correct, that the interests of both the State of California in ensuring that children are educated adequately and of parents in directing their children’s education are well met by this prior interpretation of law, and that no change in California law regarding the teaching of children privately at home is needed.

============================== ==========
From the HSLDA E-lert Service...

Court of Appeal Grants Petition for Re-hearing
On March 25, the California Court of Appeal granted a motion for rehearing in the 'In re Rachel L.' case--the controversial decision which purported to ban all homeschooling in that state unless the parents held a teaching license qualifying them to teach in public schools.
The automatic effect of granting this motion is that the prior opinion is vacated and is no longer binding on any one, including the parties in the case.
The Court of Appeal has solicited a number of public school establishment organizations to submit amicus briefs including the California Superintendent of Public Instruction, California Department of Education, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and three California teacher unions. The court also granted permission to Sunland Christian School to file an amicus brief. The order also indicates that it will consider amicus applications from other groups.
Home School Legal Defense Association will seek permission to file such an amicus brief and will coordinate efforts with a number of organizations interesting in filing briefs to support the right of parents to homeschool their children in California.
"This is a great first step," said Michael Farris, chairman of HSLDA. "We are very glad that this case will be reheard and that this opinion has been vacated, but there is no guarantee as to what the ultimate outcome will be. This case remains our top priority," he added.

Rejoice today, as you celebrate the resurrection of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ!!
Have a blessed and holy Easter!
The Easter Song
-Keith Green
Here the bells ringing
They're singing that you can be born again
Here the bells ringing
They're singing Christ is risen from the dead
The angel up on the tombstone
Said He has risen, just as He said
Quickly now, go tell his disciples
That Jesus Christ is no longer dead
Joy to the word, He has risen, hallelujah
He's risen, hallelujah
He's risen, hallelujah
Hear the bells ringing
They're singing that you can be healed right now
Hear the bells ringing, they're singing
Christ, He will reveal it now
The angels, they all surround us
And they are ministering Jesus' power
Quickly now, reach out and receive it
For this could be your glorious hour
Joy to the world, He has risen, hallelujah
He's risen, hallelujah
He's risen, hallelujah, hallelujah
The angel up on the tombstone
Said He has risen, just as He said
Quickly now, go tell his disciples
That Jesus Christ is no longer dead
Joy to the world, He has risen, hallelujah
He's risen, hallelujah
He's risen, hallelujah
Hallelujah

Mar. 12, 2008 - Defending Homeschooling in California
======================================================================
From the HSLDA E-lert Service...
======================================================================
***** ***** ***** *****
JOINT LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT - March 11, 2008
From: Roy Hanson's Private and Home Educators of California and HSLDA
***** ***** ***** *****
Bill: Assembly Concurrent Resolution ACR 115 - Denounces Anti-homeschool Appellate Court Decision
Author: State Assembly Member Joel Anderson
Position: Strongly SUPPORT
Status: Introduced Monday, March 10, 2008 - May be assigned to a policy committee first, or be sent directly to the Assembly Floor for a vote by a date yet to be assigned.
Summary of Resolution:
ACR 115 supports the right of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children. It expresses the Legislature's position that the Appellate Court's interpretation of the laws, under which parents teach their children at home, was misguided. And, it would call on the California Supreme Court to reverse the Appellate Court's opinion. ACR 115 will NOT change any existing laws and it will NOT create any new law.

B. Background
C. The Resolution
***** ***** ***** *****
A. Action Items:
We need to send a strong message!
Call your State Assemblymember and State Senator as soon as possible.
(You can find your Assembly Member's Capitol phone and fax numbers, and address by entering your 9-digit ZIP code in HSLDA's Legislative Tool Box at http://www.capwiz.com/hslda, or by calling the office in your county that handles voter registration. The Governor's office is (916)445-2841 or fax him at (916) 445-4633.)
Ask them to -
"Please support Assembly Member Anderson's ACR 115 by signing on as a co-author. This Resolution calls for a reversal of a California Appellate Court's misguided interpretation of the laws under which we educate our children at home."
Notes:
* Because e-mails are usually ignored, letters and calls are significantly more effective.
* Reprint or forward this to your friends, church, school, and group.
* Pray for a proper outcome.
***** ***** ***** *****
B. Background:
On February 28th, the Second Appellate District Court in Los Angeles issued a ruling concerning a homeschooling family from Southern California that effectively and outrageously claimed that home schooling in California is illegal unless the parent is a credentialed tutor.
At this time, any legislation would be premature and counterproductive. In order to head off legislation, Assembly Member Joel Anderson has introduced an Assembly Concurrent Resolution (ACR 115), which would express support for private home education and the desire of the Legislature that the Supreme Court reverse the Appellate Court decision.
This past weekend Assembly Member Anderson's staff contacted us to explain what he was going to do, and to seek our input. We then worked closely with Michael Smith of HSLDA and Assembly Member Anderson's staff to ensure that the wording of this Resolution would be the best possible wording under the circumstances in which the homeschoolers in California find ourselves. It is important to know that ACR 115 will NOT change any laws in California.
Nothing has changed in California regarding your homeschool. HSLDA maintains that the advice they have given home school families for some twenty-five years is still accurate and that filing a private school affidavit, or enrolling in a private school independent study program (I.S.P) are valid options under the law in California.
As we have said previously, homeschoolers should not panic but continue to home school as in the past. The leaders of the statewide homeschool groups and HSLDA continue to coordinate with each other on a regular basis. Continue praying for a positive outcome. The attorneys at HSLDA are continuing to work very hard to prepare for additional legal action in the courts to reverse this decision.
C. The Resolution:
Assembly Concurrent Resolution ACR 115
WHEREAS, Some thirty years of experience with the modern homeschooling movement in California demonstrates that home school graduates take up responsible positions as parents, as students in and graduates of Colleges and Universities, in the workplace, and as citizens in
society at large; and
WHEREAS, Homeschooling by California families with diverse backgrounds has historically given children a quality education through proven, independent approaches that nurture valuable family bonds and support successful student development; and
WHEREAS, Private homeschooling has a long and rich history in the State of California, currently estimated as involving 200,000 students in the State of California, and 2,000,000 students nationwide; and
WHEREAS, The United States Supreme Court has ruled that parents have a fundamental constitutional right to direct the education and upbringing of their children (Wisconsin v. Yoder, Pierce v. Society of Sisters, Meyer v. Nebraska); and
WHEREAS, On February 28, 2008, the Court of Appeals for the Second Appellate District in Los Angeles issued an opinion in the case of In Re: Rachel L. holding that homeschooling without a teaching credential is not legal; and
WHEREAS, This misguided interpretation denies California parents' primary responsibility and right to determine the best place and manner of their own children's education; and
WHEREAS, The fair opportunity of California families to educate their children should not be undermined; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, By the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, that the Legislature hereby calls upon the California Supreme Court to reverse the opinion.
RESOLVED, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.

Mar. 9, 2008 -
Many of you have heard about the court ruling that could subject all California parents to criminal penalties for homeschooling, unless the homeschooling parent is credentialed. If not, I urge you to read about the ruling from February 28th, which would drastically effect not only my family, but close to 200,000 other school-age children and their families here in California. The Home School Legal Defense Association is working hard. Dr. James Dobson has joined the fight. "What has occurred is another egregious decision handed down by a California appeals court that strikes at the very heart and soul of families and their children," said Focus on the Family founder and chairman Dr. James Dobson, in a broadcast Friday. "How dare these judges have the audacity to label tens of thousands of parents criminals – the equivalent to drug dealers or pickpockets – because they want to raise and educate their children according to their deeply held values?" -Christian Post Reporter And even Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has promised to step in if the home schooling ruling is not overturned. In a statement released Friday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called the ruling "outrageous" and said, "If the courts don't protect parents' rights then, as elected officials, we will." -SacBee.com You can read other articles on this situation at: TIME The Washington Times The L.A. Times World Net Daily - here, here, here, and here A big thank you to all who have expressed concern for me and my family this week. While no action is being taken against other homeschoolers, for now, we must do all we can to prevent something such as this from occurring. Please sign the petition to request depublishing of this decision and PRAY HARD with me that the necessary steps are taken to appeal or deplublish the ruling.

Our Joshie doesn't like kisses, or so he says.
Last night, as we were tucking him in, he proceeded to tell us the same thing he always does as we began to kiss him. However, this time he added, "except the kind you eat!"
Do you like kisses?

Feb. 22, 2008 - Cute Kid-isms
Ethan lost another tooth, but he decided not to tell me or Daddy. He came to us the next morning and had the following conversation with Daddy - "The tooth fairy didn't come last night," Ethan said. To which Daddy replied, "What do you mean?" "Look, I lost another tooth." "Did the Tooth Fairy forget, again?" (Yes, I've forgotten more than once to replace a lost tooth with some money, okay!) "No," Ethan said coyly, "I didn't tell Mommy that I lost another tooth, but I proved that the Tooth Fairy isn't real!"

Julia and I were sneaking a few bites of Rocky Road ice cream last night. Suddenly she pulled the spoon-full of ice cream out of her mouth and said, "Look, Mom, goo!" No, honey, those are marshmallows!

Feb. 10, 2008 - Family News
Friday was a big day for Miss Julia! She was finally rid of her cast, after much anticipation, and new x-rays were taken. Her leg healed in record time - just 5 weeks, and she's as good as new! Well, almost. She has a skinny little leg, and even after two full days without her cast she is still a bit tentative about walking on it. I can only imagine how nervous I would be after not using my leg for that long. If I know my Julia, though, she'll be running and dancing around in no time! After her cast was removed we went straight to Great Clips so Julia could follow through on a promise she made. You see, a while back she asked me if she could cut her hair. Two years ago I would have freaked out at the idea. (Oh, wait, I did, but I'll tell you about that later!) Daddy, Julia, and I talked about it and decided that when her hair was long enough to cut off the required 10 inches that she could cut it and donate it to Locks of Love. For Julia it was an easy decision - Fully aware that she would be making someone very happy by sharing her hair, she was extremely excited! So, Friday afternoon she had her gorgeous hair cut a whole 12 inches to donate. She felt so good knowing that she will be helping someone who is sick to feel beautiful again!
 BEFORE AFTER
We celebrated Ben's 2nd birthday on Saturday. He was a bit overwhelmed with all of the attention, but I think he had a ball with all his family around to help celebrate his life. He still doesn't say much, being a boy of few words, but if you ask him how old he is he proudly holds up two fingers (his thumb and hi index finger) and says with a big grin, "I two!"
In other news, Noah's first tooth finally popped through!! Tooth #2 is just about up, as well. Poor baby - He's been miserable... He won't sleep, and doesn't want to do anything but nurse. Sleepless nights with a cranky baby is no fun, let me tell ya!! I just feel so bad for him. If you would be so kind as to keep me in your prayers, I would be grateful... I have been getting really bad headaches lately. Almost every day my head kills me. It wouldn't be so bad if they were just headaches, but they are of the migraine kind, complete with sensitivity to light and feelings of nausea. Things just don't get done when mommy is in pain. I think that about covers it... Whew, what a weekend!

With all of the toys, books and school stuff filling our home, it tends to looks as if it is void of any order. In reality we are very systematic in the way our main parts (each family member) are connected, so as to form one whole unit (our family), thus creating "organized chaos".
